Chester Ufnal passed away on June 27, 2012, a Wednesday afternoon surrounded by his loving family at Toronto General Hospital following aeortic aneurysm surgery in his 92nd year.
He leaves his wife Bea (Bernice) and was a patriarch to a blended family of nine. Margaret; Richard (Deborah); Joan (Sergei); Chester Jr.; Camille;Ed (Katherine); Scott (Susanne) Step; Darrin (Sally) Step; and Claire(John). Grandfather to 3; Stephanie (Matt) ; Jonathan; Brodie; with another girl soon on the way. He was the last child of a Polish family of six all born in Toronto . Late Mary, Late Wanda, Late John, Late Helen, and older brother George still living at the age of 95!
In his younger University days ‘Chips Stanley’ had his own band and played with Count Basie and his band during gigs at Palais Royal, Club Top Hat, and other band in the 40s. He was the trumpet player!
A Professional Engineer for over fifty years, Chester was long time president of Wyllie and Ufnal Consultants. His firm was involved with numerous engineering feats including the MacDonald Cartier Bridge in Ottawa, the Rougemount Drive Bridge in Pickering, and the John Street Pedestrian Bridge to the Rogers Centre in Downtown Toronto, as well as many moveable bridges but he was more personally involved in numerous land developments of late.
A long term resident of Pickering, Chester was a good provider for his large family. He was perpetually in motion puttering around his residence on the Rouge River. He knew how everything worked (or would take it apart to find out) and could fix just about anything from materials at hand (especially Epoxy glue). He got teased often about his affinity for sanding the house every spring. He had a great sense of humor to the very end.
He was an avid reader, particularly of nonfiction. He watched countless documentaries, typically related to history, industry or nature. He did crosswords daily, and played Freecell on the computer. When not otherwise occupied, he enjoyed his yard and pool area. Pets had a natural attraction towards him in his later years, and was often caught feeding them from the table!
Chester enjoyed travel, and brought his family along on many trips. Many social events were hosted at the Ufnal Estates over the years, where all were made to feel welcome and the Ufnals were kind and generous hosts.
His wishes to have no funeral will be respected. There will be a Celebration of Life later in the month of July. Details posted on the Celebration of Life Page.
I am thinking of you and hope the days ahead will be easier with having the family close by.

I was sad to learn of Chester’s passing. He was a wonderful uncle and always a warm and generous host. My thoughts are with you.
Barry and I enjoyed your hospitality and good times when we lived in Pickering and will remember Chester as a gracious host and a dedicated family man.
